St. Augustine's quotes

If you believe in the gospel what you like, and reject what you don't like, it is not the gospel you believe, but yourself.

He that is good is free, though he is a slave; he that is evil is a slave, though he be a king.

We need not despair of any man, so long as he lives. For God deemed it better to bring good out of evil than not to permit evil at all.

God has promised forgiveness to your repentance, but He has not promised tomorrow to your procrastination.

The truth is neither mine nor his nor another's; but belongs to us all whom Thou callest to partake of it, warning us terribly, not to account it private to ourselves, lest we be deprived of it.

Oh God, Thou hast made us for thyself, and ours hearts are restless until they find their rest in Thee

God chooses us, not because we believe, but that we may believe

O let thy Scriptures be my pure delight, let me not be deceived in them, neither let me deceive by them.

Nothing whatever pertaining to godliness and real holiness can be accomplished without grace.

We are ensnared by the wisdom of the serpent; we are set free by the foolishness of God

The greatest virtues are only splendid sins.

Understanding is the reward of faith. Therefore seek not to understand that thou mayest believe, but believe that thou mayest understand.

Trust the past to God's mercy, the present to God's love and the future to God's providence.

No one is really happy merely because he has what he wants, but only if he wants things he ought to want.

In the absence of justice, what is sovereignty but organised robbery?

Charity is no substitute for justice withheld.
